When the museum lost its privileged position the frame was broken. The individual art work became its own meta- language site with its existence tied to a direct communication with the viewer. It was both a mirror and a mirror image. Artists, like their works operating with this kind of meta narrative, began a new kind of wandering career. In this process we have had to find our own ways to explore an origin and cultural context. In both using and interrogating fixed definitions we have sought out new concepts for a rediscovery of the “halo” in today’s society. As with the rhizome we all grow from one but are located by individual coordinates.
Most of the artists in WHITE HEAT were born in the 90s with their families sharing in a newly prospering China. The internet also started its march towards domination of popular and business culture in this period, making our generation famous for its new freedoms and open ways. Ironically there are those online who criticize us as a “brain-dead clan” because of our new behaviors. But in the pull of these contradictions the space of operations actually grows.
This exhibition by a new group of young artists represents a materialization of our wandering in this new space, and a starting point for fresh discoveries.
